Let There Be Light

 As I was standing in the kitchen, I felt someone staring...

Amy and I have been getting all of our new furniture off of Craigslist. Everything is almost brand new and usually half the price! It's also an adventure to meet new people and see new apartments and neighborhoods. Everyone that we have met so far has been more than nice, welcoming and friendly. Most of them have interesting stories about where they came from and where they're going. We joke that we should write a book about all of our Craigslist experiences!

One night last week, we headed to the Upper West Side to pick up a $5 coat rack from someone. As we were waiting outside of the luxury high rise condo, we noticed a woman walk by us and into the building in 6 inch heels and dressed to the nines. As we watched her walk into the lobby, we recognized her - Gayle King!!! Oprah's best friend!! We weren't absolutely sure, so we googled to see if we could get a recent picture of her. There was a news article from that day, with a picture of her at an event she had attended earlier in the afternoon. She was wearing the exact same outfit as the woman we saw! It was her! 

The guy who sold us the coat rack turned out to be quite interesting too. He was just flying back from Labrador, Canada, where he had been filming in the mines. He was selling everything in his apartment because he was moving to Brussels, where he would be working on another project. 

Friday night Amy and two of our other friends who live in Queens (Maureen and her roommate Kate) went to go pick up curtains that Amy and I found on Craigslist. The guy selling them lives only a few blocks north of us and turned out to be a Fordham grad! Class of 2002. He is a licensed U.S. soccer player coach and also an adjunct professor at NYU and St. John's. He was also very friendly and glad to have more Fordham alum in the neighborhood!

Saturday morning Amy and I took the Q to the last stop in Queens, Ditmars. From there, we walked about 10 minutes to an apartment to pick up two new pieces for our apartment. The woman selling them was originally from Serbia and was moving back to enroll her children in school. We ended up talking to her for quite a while about her experience growing up in Serbia with her grandmother. She told us about how she was born in Detroit, moved back to Serbia when she was a baby, grew up in Serbia, moved back to the States to Wisconsin and then to New York. She had two young children who she wanted to enroll in a European school because she believed their education system in Serbia was better and much cheaper. Her plan is to move back to the States when the children are older. She was the nicest!

Besides picking up more furniture, Amy and I also installed our new knobs and started painting this weekend.

This Saturday is our move in date and we couldn't be more excited! We spent almost all weekend in Astoria,  exploring the neighborhood and surrounding Queens area. We can walk to a Home Depot from our apartment! It's only about 20 blocks total, which is about a mile. Everything we need is within walking distance and the one mile radius around our apartment seems to be great.
