It being my very first 4th of July in New York City, I knew what I had to do. The Macy's Fireworks! Luckily, I had a willing buddy to accompany me. Cody had never seen them in person either, so we both were excited to check them out.
We decided to spend our morning in Central Park. On the walk from my apartment to the park, we noticed that the streets were weirdly deserted.
No cars or taxis on Park Ave??
We correctly guessed that everyone was already headed over to the West side, where the fireworks would be going off.

After Central Park, we headed back to the apartment, where Amy had ribs, hot dogs and fruit out for a mini 4th of July Party. We hung out on the roof for a while, which was fun because we could spot people around the neighborhood on their roofs and balconies, grilling burgers and waving American flags.
After, Cody and I headed over to the West side to secure our fireworks spot. We had determined that we could see the fireworks from about 20th Street to 60th (Macy's had barges floating on the Hudson). We went for the 50's since we were arriving about 8 pm. We just managed to squeeze into a police barricade on 50th Street.

The show was great, but unfortunately the way home wasn't as smooth. We walked from 50th up to 79th Avenue to try and escape the crowds and catch the crosstown bus. We figured most people would be hopping on the subways and heading downtown. False! The line for the crosstown bus was at least one whole avenue long!
We kept walking and eventually just walked all the way home. All the way from 50th and 12th Ave to 77th and 1st Ave! That's 4 miles!
We were definitely a bit sore the next morning, but it was still well worth it.
